Why Biodiversity is Important for Life on Earth
Why Biodiversity is Important for Life on Earth
We live in what is called the biosphere of Earth. The other three portions of Earth’s ecosystem include the lithosphere (rock), hydrosphere (water), and atmosphere (air). The biosphere, however, is home to all living organisms on Earth. The biosphere’s chemical makeup is constantly changing to keep up with the needs of biotic organisms. Without the biosphere’s environment, life on Earth would be non-existent due to the lack of biodiversity.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working towards restructuring biodiversity in our ecosystems by implementing environmental protection regulations. National parks are being safeguarded to conserve biodiversity in every part of the United States. Today, 401 national parks cover over 84 million acres of safe-havened land to support biodiversity. Spanning different wildlands and threatened species, national parks are striving to expand biodiversity across the world. Protection of these differing species is critical to maintaining a growing life cycle on Earth. Maintaining several species in a secluded area regulates the natural environment. Biodiversity is key to ensure a flourishing and safe ecosystem for every species.
How does biodiversity work?
The biosphere provides the necessary environmental conditions for survival. Living organisms are required to adapt to the environment of the biosphere. The biosphere is home to biodiversity within ecosystems while providing a reliable source of food on Earth.
Biodiversity is just as it says: biological diversity. Every ecosystem varies, but organisms tend to be more successful in ecosystems with various species. Biodiversity is the foundation for success of ecosystem services. These services include food, water, disease control, and culture. Biodiversity creates a fast paced dynamic for nature as it strengthens the complexity of life on Earth.
Professor David Macdonald of Oxford University said, “Without biodiversity, there is no future for humanity.” Biodiversity creates competition within every small ecosystem. However, every day biodiversity is threatened at the hands of humans. Industrial expansion is limiting biodiversity more than ever. Habitat loss, invasive species, and pollutions are all major threats to biodiversity in the biosphere.
