The Number of Drones Will Increase Significantly By 2021

Drones are categorized as Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). The unique aspect about a drone is that it is controlled from the ground by an operator rather than a pilot. Drones use a variety of sensors to make flight easy and prevent crashes.

The Federal Aviation Association predicts that the number of drones will increase from 1.1 million to 3.5 million by 2021. This is due to drones’ versatility that makes them capable of being used across the world. The following are some of the many ways a drone can be utilized:

  • Construction
  • Photogrammetry
  • Military
  • Law Enforcement
  • Agriculture
  • Shipping/Delivery
  • Recreational Fun

Between February 2016 and February 2017, drone sales in the U.S have more than doubled. Even though people are purchasing drones, most are not buying high-end drones that cost thousands of dollars. In fact, according to Recode, “In the first two months of 2017, drones that cost more than $300 accounted for less than half — 40 percent — of units sold.” This shows that people are interested in drones, but do not want to spend money on them.

Many big-name companies are hoping to jump on the drone train sometime soon. Some of these companies include Amazon, DHL, and IBM. However, Google and Chipotle are testing a drone to deliver burritos to the students of Virginia Tech. Domino’s is also starting up a drone program that will deliver hot pizza to your doorstep. These companies are ahead of the game, but many other retailers are planning to launch drones sometime soon.

Drones are becoming a vital part of the engineering industry. Engineers use drones to plan and complete a variety of projects. Drones can manage safety inspections using high-tech cameras when the area’s conditions are not ideal.

As an engineering firm, CEDARVILLE strives to create projects that are efficient and cost effective. We have implemented several technologies in our strategic planning and design process. One of these technologies includes the use of a drone. CEDARVILLE’s drone is widely used for aerial photogrammetry and 3D mapping.
